Move millions by changing one default

You run policy for a whole country. Hit all four national targets using defaults only, no bans. Push a fee too far and people turn on you.

Your policy levers

You're a government economic advisor. No bans, no mandates, only nudges. Change a default and watch a nation move.

Organ Donation Default

Default Bias works against you. Most people never opt in (~15%).

Plastic Bag Default Fee$0.00

A small charge (the famous 5 to 10 cents) cuts bag use by 60%+. Loss aversion beats any poster.

"Save More Tomorrow" Enrollment0%

Auto-escalate savings from future raises. People never feel the cut, so enrollment sticks and the savings rate climbs.

Nudge Effectiveness31%

0/4 national targets met with zero mandates.

Notice the single biggest jump comes from flipping organ donation to opt-out. No one is forced. The default simply changed. That's the entire thesis of nudge policy: same freedom, radically different outcomes.

Background

Why defaults run the world

Default Bias

Whatever box is pre-checked is what you keep forever.

People stick with the option that is already picked, because changing it takes effort. Companies set that option to whatever pays them.

Loss Aversion

Losing $20 ruins your week. Finding $20 is just "neat."

Losing something feels about twice as bad as gaining the same thing feels good. So you fight harder to keep stuff than to get it.

Choice Overload

Too many options and you pick nothing, or the worst one.

Give someone 500 options and they freeze. They give up or take whatever is labeled most popular, which is usually the one that pays best.
